01

Worldclass Safety Features

Canny elevators come with multiple safety protections, including emergency stop buttons, automatic rescue devices, and overspeed governors, ensuring passenger safety.

In the event of a power outage, UPS will take the lift to the next level, so it will not trap passengers. Light curtain on the door detects motion between the doors, so it will not close on people. In the unlikely event that ropes suspending the lift car are broken, safety gear will trigger and clamp the lift car on the rail, to prevent the lift car from free failling to the ground

02

Whisper-Quiet Operation

The gearless traction system ensures quiet operation, making them suitable for residential settings where noise reduction is essential. Our elevators are as quiet as a fan, unlike other brands that have a high-decibel startup noise.

Space-Saving Design

MRL (machine-room-less) technology means no bulky overhead machinery, making Canny lifts ideal for both new builds and retrofits.

Our common pit depth requirement is within 350mm, down to a minimum of 150mm. Compared to other MRL lifts commonly 1m – 1.5m. Minimum headroom requirement is 2800mm, compared to other MRL lifts which is commonly 3500mm or more.

Energy Efficient

Equipped with permanent magnet synchronous gearless traction machines, these elevators are lighter than traditional systems and can save over 40% in energy consumption. They also require less maintenance due to the absence of grease replacement needs. Our elevators use 230V power instead of 380V, which offers significant power savings.

1. Can I install a residential elevator in an existing home?

Yes, you can. Many New Zealand homes — even older ones — can accommodate a residential lift. Thanks to compact, machine-room-less (MRL) designs, elevators can often be retrofitted with minimal structural changes. We’ll assess your space and offer design options that suit your layout and compliance needs.

2. How much space do I need for a home elevator?

It depends on the model. Our most compact option, the Smart Home Series, requires a shaft footprint of just 1000mm × 1000mm (internal).
For more spacious models, like the Standard or Premium Series, the minimum shaft size starts at approximately 1250mm × 1250mm.
We’ll provide detailed specifications to guide your architect or builder.

3. How safe are residential elevators?

Residential elevators are extremely safe when installed correctly and maintained regularly. All our lifts comply with NZ Building Code Clause D2, NZS 4334:1997, and include advanced safety features such as:

  • Door interlocks
  • Overspeed protection
  • Light curtain sensors
  • Emergency backup power (UPS)
  • Automatic leveling in case of a fault
Every system is signed off by a qualified inspector before handover.

4. How much does it cost altogether?

Total cost depends on the model, number of floors, site conditions, and finishes. As a general guide (NZD, incl. basic installation):

  • Standard Series: from $55,000+
  • Premium Series: from $60,000+
  • Compact Series: from $70,000+

These prices include consultation, design, lift supply, installation, and commissioning. Building consent and site-specific construction work (e.g. shaft building) may be additional.

5. How long does it take to install the elevator?

From initial consultation to final commissioning, the full process usually takes 8–12 weeks, depending on:

  • Council consent timeframes
  • Site readiness
  • Customisation level

The physical installation itself typically takes 1-2 weeks once the shaft is prepared.

6. How do I choose the right lift?

Here’s how we recommend deciding:

  • Shaft Size
    • If internal shaft space is less than 1250 × 1250 mm, your only option is the Compact Series, which has a fully integrated, compact design.
    • If space is 1250 × 1250 mm or more, you can choose between the Standard and Premium Series.
  • Technology
    • The Standard Series uses a belt-driven traction system, which is quieter and more modern.
    • The Premium Series uses a rope-driven system — more traditional, but highly reliable.
  • Headroom Requirements
    • Premium: needs 2800mm
    • Standard: needs 3200mm
  • If ceiling height is limited, Premium may be your only option.
  • Pricing (approx.)
    • Compact: from $68K+
    • Standard: from $58K+
    • Premium: from $53K+

7. What is the warranty length?

All our residential elevators come with a 1-year warranty, covering both parts and labour. Extended 5-year warranty and servicing plans are available upon request.

8. What is included in lift maintenance?

Routine maintenance typically includes:

  • Full inspection of mechanical and electrical components
  • Lubrication of key moving parts
  • Door operation checks
  • Safety system testing (e.g. sensors, UPS, interlocks)
  • Adjustment of ride comfort and leveling accuracy
  • Diagnostic reports and recommendations for future servicing

We recommend annual servicing to keep your lift running smoothly and in compliance with NZ safety standards.
